This is the least coverage the law requires. It often isn’t enough to pay for a serious accident, and anything above your limits can come out of your own pocket.

These state-established programs cover homes that private insurers won’t. They’re meant as a last resort: coverage is often more limited and can cost more, so shop the private market and ask an agent first. Eligibility rules vary.
