Find your state insurance department
Insurance is regulated by each state. Your state insurance department is where you file a complaint about an insurer or agent, and where you can check that an agent or company is licensed to do business with you.

Short answer

How do I file a complaint against an insurance company?

Start by contacting your insurer, explaining the problem, and asking for its decision in writing. If that doesn’t resolve it, file a complaint with the insurance department in the state where your policy was issued; most accept complaints online at no cost. Include your policy and claim numbers, a dated summary of what happened, what you have already done to fix it, and copies of important letters or emails.

How can I check if an insurance agent is licensed?

Look the agent up in your state insurance department’s license search using their name or license number. The results show whether the license is active and which types of insurance the agent can sell. Many states use a shared lookup run by the National Association of Insurance Commissioners. If you can’t find the agent or the license isn’t active, don’t buy through them, and contact your state insurance department.

Before you file a complaint
Contact your insurer first and ask for its decision in writing. If the problem isn’t resolved, your state department of insurance can review it. Most departments accept complaints online at no cost. For employer health plans, the U.S. Department of Labor may be the right regulator instead.
